The word vegetarian is one that has become somewhat vague among the general population because too many people have inappropriately adopted it as a label for their lifestyle. Vegetarian is a blanket term used to describe a person who does not consume meat, poultry, fish, or seafood. A vegetarian is someone who avoids meat and, to some extent, products derived from animals. A strict vegetarian is called a vegan. Vegans are more vigilant about avoiding any product derived from animals including clothing, shoes, and accessories.

Ovo-lacto vegetarians are vegetarians who do not consume meat, poultry, fish, and seafood, but do consume eggs and milk. Ovo-vegetarian is a term used to describe someone who would be a vegan if they did not consume eggs. Lacto-vegetarian is a term used to describe someone who would be a vegan if they did not consume milk.

What is a Vegan

Vegan is the strictest sub-category of vegetarians. Vegans differ from all the other types of vegetarians as they eat only plant based foods and consume no animal products of any kind. Vegans eat no animal products, no meat, fish or poultry, no eggs or dairy. Vegans eat grains, beans, and soy products in order to get their protein. They can get calcium from foods such as tofu, kale, broccoli, sunflower seeds, dried figs, and tortillas.

Vegetarians Can Be Very Health

Numerous epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that vegetarians are nearly 50 percent less likely to die from cancer than non-vegetarians. For many of the same reasons, vegetarians are at a lower risk for osteoporosis. Many legumes, beans, lentils, and nuts provide enough protein and minerals for our health needs and vegetarians know this. However, just because you cut out meat doesn’t automatically make you healthy. There are some unhealthy vegetarians out there. They are called “junk-food vegetarians” because while they don’t eat meat, some will eat potato chips, french fries, and snack foods. Even though these foods don’t technically contain meat, they aren’t good for you. Vegans and vegetarians are less likely to get diabetes or have gall bladder problems and gallstones and it has been proven that vegetarians are less likely to have cholesterol and high blood pressure problems. Vegetarians are also less prone to obesity. Being vegetarian is actually very conducive to an athletic lifestyle.

Becoming a vegetarian is a blanket term used to describe a person who does not consume meat, poultry, fish, or seafood. And, on the whole, vegetarians are less likely to be afflicted with the chronic diseases that are leading killers and cripplers in societies where meat is the centerpiece of the diet. Medical studies have shown that vegetarians are less likely to suffer from heart disease, cancer, diet-related diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure, so a vegetarian diet is very good for your health. So if you want to get healthy without taking a lot of pills or having to go to the gym seven days a week, one place to start is by giving up all meat, poultry, fish, or seafood. One final reason to be vegetarian is the animal rights aspect.

Vegetarian burgers unlike burgers made of meat are a healthy and substantial food. There are several ways to make a vegetarian burger and I will list the way I like mine made.

The first is a vegetarian burger recipe, for one, that not everyone will like because it has onions:

Ingredients:

1 small onion chopped fine
1 very small or half of a medium size bell pepper (green, red, yellow does not matter)
1 small shredded carrot
1 cup of cooked dark beans (drained can of kidney beans is fine)
salt and pepper to taste.

Procedure: Place chopped onions, peppers and shredded carrots into a bowl and add the beans. Mash all of the ingredients together thoroughly. The beans will act as the base for the burger keeping all of the other ingredients together. Form into a burger. Dip the formed burger first into milk (vegans use soy milk) then into either cracker, corn flake or bread crumbs. In a skillet heat about one tablespoon of olive oil. Place the burger into the olive oil to fry. Brown it on both sides and serve on a bun with a slice of tomato and some lettuce. If you love onions place a thin slice of onion on it too. You can serve this with any kind of side dish you like along with a slice of pickle.

The second is a vegetarian burger recipe for one that is a little different and is not for the onion lover.

Ingredients:

1 very small or half of a medium size bell pepper chopped finely (green, red, yellow does not matter),
1 small shredded carrot,
1 small tomato diced
1 cup of cooked brown or white rice
salt and pepper to taste.

Procedure: Place the chopped pepper, shredded carrot and diced tomato into a bowl and add the 1 cup of cooked rice. Mash all of the ingredients together until firm and form into a burger. Fry in skillet with one tablespoon of olive oil. If you choose you may dip the burger into some milk (vegans use soy milk) and then into cracker crumbs corn flake or bread crumbs before you fry it but it is not necessary because the rice will brown. Serve on a bun with a slice of tomato and some lettuce. You may use any side dish you like with this burger along with slices of bread and butter pickles.

I use carrots to make this vegetarian burger recipe juicier. Although in these there is something about the carrot that makes the burger tastier. For variations on these recipes add other ingredients such as mushrooms, cooked mashed pumpkin or butternut squash or any other veggie that you enjoy. A variation of these recipes makes for a much more enjoyable burger each time you make it and eat it.

The rice or beans in these recipes take the place of meat and add substance to the burger. The beans in this recipe is lower in calories but the rice is easier to form and cooks up more solidly thereby, making the consistency of these two burgers a little different. These recipes contain not only healthy ingredients but they are tasty too. Try both of these vegetarian burger recipes and choose your own favorite.

Traditional potato soup recipes often include bacon, sour cream, and other animal products. For vegetarians and vegans who want a hearty potato soup, this recipe is the answer. Kids and adults alike love this nutritious, satisfying soup.

3 med potatoes, skinned and cubed

1/2 lb. tofu

4 cups water (you can substitute one cup of water with vegetable broth)

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

1 teaspoon salt

1 T. olive oil

1/4 c. chopped parsley

black pepper to taste

Directions:

Fill a large pot with the water and vegetable broth. Bring the water to a simmer and lower the potatoes and onions into the pot. Add sea salt. Simmer for about 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

While the potatoes and onions are cooking, blend the tofu and olive oil in a food processor. When the potatoes and onions are done, add half of the batch to the food processor with the tofu and olive oil mix and process.

Return the contents of the food processor to the pot containing the water and the other half of the potato/onion mix. Add parsley and black pepper to taste. You might also want to add bacon bits or vegetarian bacon bits to the mix.

Simmer for a few minutes until warm enough to serve.

Inevitably an arugment came up about protein and how much you REALLY need, how bad is milk really, and so on.

Can any one give me good, scientific (with sources), reason for living a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle? Please refrain from using the whole animal rights bit. I’m more concerned with how this diet benefits you physically.

So I just found out there is a difference between Vegan and a Vegaterian my understanding Vegans will not eat a single thing that comes from animals, where as a vegeterian will eat dairy products, eggs and such. Isn’t that kind of hypocritical, what’s the point most do it because they’re saving the animals right? I just don’t understand the point of not eating meat I guess, I don’t put you down for it to each their own, but if you’re going to quit eating meat shouldn’t you just go all the way it’s like a half hearted effort.
Keep the answers coming this is great, I love asking questions where I actually learn something, not my thing, but very interesting to read these answesr.
anyone contemplating this has to make some serious life changes to be vegan or vegaterian.
