Can you help make a lunch that will keep me energized for the rest of the day?
I’m starting school as a freshman and not sure what they serve for lunch. I’ve been a vegeterian for about a month now and I really like it. So can you help me with a nice animal friendly meal I can bring to school?

I take it you won’t be standing in the trash pizza and cheeseburger line?
It’s nice to see people taking a healthier approach to high school! Anyway… don’t pack too many carbs as they tend to make you sleepy… bananas have potassium which can give you a lot of energy. Tomatoes are full of anti-oxidants which, combined with other things, keep you healthy. Back when I took lunches in high school, it was always a few rice cakes (I like the ranch or the plain ones), a banana, a can or bottle of V8, carrot sticks, and a trail mix (like, granola or cheerios, peanut butter chips, chocolate chips or m&ms, sunflower seeds, etc). Only pack yogurt or a salad if you have one of those freezer packs.

Peanut butter has animal products in it. Just in case you didn’t know.

Try eating something higher in vitamin C, sometimes that can help perk you up through the end of the day. Things like tomato salad are nice and are pretty portable.

Buy a thermos for hot foods (about 6 dollars) so you can pack a hearty lunch of curried cous cous, mac and cheese, veggie stew, ratatoulli, spanish rice, soup, or your other favorite hot vegetarian foods. My 12 year old daughter is vegetarian, and I pack her a thermos every day, and include some crackers, bread, trail mix, yogurt, or fruit on the side. GOOD FOR YOU for choosing not to trash your body with that nasty school lunch garbage! I am giving you a star, my dear. Keep up the good work!

I’m in high school too and trust me, you are going to be so much better off bringing your own lunch. I do, and I have since sixth grade (I wish I had started sooner). School lunches are so unhealthy.
One of my favorite lunches is natural peanut butter topped with raisins in a pita pocket. I also bring some fruit, like a banana.
Another lunch I like is a carrot, tomato, brocco sprout, and hummus whole wheat wrap. On the side, I usually bring a few almonds and a banana (can you tell I love bananas?).
I have not brought this to school before, so I don’t know how well it will travel, but this is also good: a carrot, tomato and lettuce wrap with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. You can mix up the veggies you put on the wrap if you want… I bet even avocado would be good…

You gotta have the right mix of protein and carbs if you’re looking to stay energized all day. Maybe a whole wheat tortilla with lots of garlicky hummus and sprouts sprinkled with paprika or cayenne depending on taste. Some cubed smoked cheese on the side (if you’re not vegan that is. Smoked cheese was my savior when I was trying to get away from meat lunches) and a granola bar or banana to wrap it up.
