Not healthy for cats. Naturally carnivores must have meat in order to stay healthy.

actually NO!
No, cats can not survive on a vegetarian diet.

Cats are unique in that they are obligate carnivores and their bodies were designed by nature to only absorb the nutrients they need from meat. They are predators and you can’t remove what nature designed them to eat safely. Cat’s don’t’ even have the metabolic and enzymatic capabilities to properly digest plant matter.

sorry cats cannot be a vegerterian

No. Cats are OBLIGATE carnivores. They require meat to survive. They are not meant to eat vegetables, fruits, grains, etc. ONLY meat.

No, cats do not do well on a strictly vegetarian diet, although there are companies promoting vegan diets for cats. Cats are carnivores, thus they need meat as a primary in their diet.

Here is an article from Wikipedia that has a nice section on vegetarian diets for cats and explains the problems with it.

But so you have information on the pro-vegan diet, I have attached a link to a vegan catfood site. The link takes you to their FAQ where they discuss including meat in a cat’s diet to prevent urinary tract problems.

In contrast, dogs are omnivores like us and can adapt nicely to a vegan diet.

Hope these help.

Some cats will eat fruit(1 of ours absolutely loves watermelon), but they can’t survive long-term on a vegetarian diet.
They need a lot of protein and I don’t believe they can digest any plant sources of it. Even if they eat constantly, they’ll still succumb to malnutrition because they don’t get the needed nutrients.
Also, cats can’t digest sugars well; they can’t even taste sweet stuff, that’s how unimportant fruits and veggies are biologically for them.

So… Uh, no. Cats absolutely can NOT survive on a veggie diet for very long.

Nope, cats are obligate carnivores and require taurine in their diet which is found in meat.

They cannot lead a healthy lifestyle as a vegetarian no matter what any pet food companies claim.

Hi!

This is not a stupid question at all and I will try to answer it.

Good thing you asked too because they are people who thinks that cats can be a vegetarian. Unfortunately, they cannot. Just like everyone here mentioned, cats are obligate carnivores, meaning meat is their natural staple diet.

In the wild, you don’t see cats munching on grass like a cow or eating foliage like a deer. That is just not what they eat and even after domestication, their physiology remains the same.

Meat provide an essential nutrient to the cat, called Taurine. It is an important part of the cat diet and is essential in preventing a disorder in cats called “dilated cardiomyopathy” (which is a failure of the heart muscle whereupon the heart tissue itself swells to try to meet the animal’s circulatory needs), as well as being very significant in helping feline reproduction and prevention of a progressive retinal disease called feline central retinal degeneration(FCRD) which will cause blindness if left untreated.

So, while eating vegetable or going vegetarian is healthy for humans, let our cats eat what they are meant to eat. MEAT.
