Is there a vegeterian alternative to fish to get Omega 3 fatty acids?
I newly became a vegeterian, and I want to have all of the nutrients that might be lost by it. But I want all the viatamins and nutrients I would have being a person who ate both meat and veggies

Yes. There are a couple of supplements made from seaweed that supply Omega 3.

I think you can buy Omega 3 substitutes. It’s the kind of thing you buy in a big jar then sneak into your foods.
Sorry that I don’t have anything specific, but it’s worth looking into.

avocado…. i think its the only veg with the good type of fats and oils

Not sure, but i do know that there are Omega 3 pills you can buy at Walgreens or any drug store

Flaxseed, hazlenuts, walnuts, pecans, kiwi, black raspberry

I avoid supplements in a pill form… To get Omega 3 fatty acids I add flax seed to smoothies.

Flax seeds or flax seed oil have Omega 3. I use oil and butter that contains flax seed oil. I use smart balance light butter and smart balance omega oil. Flax seed oil has a grainy taste that is a little bitter, but I find you can’t taste it in these products.
Good luck with being a veggie. I have been one for 3 years now.

My god, just eat fish.

I use flaxseeds. Get the ground up kind or grind it up yourself because your body will get more out of it that way. You can get a big bag of the stuff for like $3-4, look in the health food aisle at the store. Put it in smoothies or muffins or whatever and it actually tastes pretty good. There are other sources of omega-3 I just haven’t looked into it.

Apart from the ones commonly mentioned (walnuts, seaweed and flax seeds), consider chia seeds.
According the advertising leaflet I got with the packet, chia contains:
8x more omega 3 (ALA) than salmon
5x more calcium than milk
3x more iron than spinach
3x more antioxidants than blueberries
15x more magnesium than broccoli
more protein than oats, wheat, barley
soluble and insoluble fibre
zero sugar, zero salt
gluten free
You mix it with water, following the instructions, and it turns into a kind of gel, which doesn’t have much flavour of its own, but (like tofu) it absorbs the flavour of whatever you mix it with. It can then be mixed with fruit juice, or in a smoothie, or added to cereal, as a salad dressing, in soups, fruit salads, or a lot of other possibilities. You can also mix the dry seeds into cereal, soups, bread and cakes, etc. For more information and recipes, visit:

I haven’t (knowingly) eaten any fish (or fish oil) for about 34 years, and my brain and nerve function is still in very good condition. Ditto with my mother (a vegetarian), who hasn’t eaten fish since around the start of World War 2.

Avacado, and Flaxseed Oil (a vitamin)

If you eat a well-rounded diet, there won’t be any nutrients lost just by being a vegetarian. As others have said, nuts, flax seed, and chia seed provide omega-3 fats. Fish get their omega-3 from algae that contains it, and if you’d rather take a pill that certainly does come in pill-form.

Flax seed is an excellent source, but it’s best absorbed when ground up. You can also use flax seed oil, but don’t EVER heat it up. Use it in smoothies or salad dressings.
Hemp foods also have omega-3 fatty acids, but like flax oil, don’t ever heat up hemp seed oil. I’ve tried hemp nut butter, and it’s quite delicious. And for you DEA types, there are no psychoactive compounds in hemp, okay?
Walnuts are another source of omega-3.
As for other nutrients and minerals, as long as you eat a balanced diet, you should be fine. But if it makes you feel better, it can’t hurt to take a multivitamin.
